EUROPEAN FEDERATION OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
Working Party of Multiphase Fluid Flow

Minutes of the Business Meeting

Location and date: Nuremberg, Germany, Thursday 28th June, 2001
Present: Prof Bohnet
Prof Brauner
Prof Crine
Prof Drahos (chairman)
Prof Mewes
Prof von Rohr
Dr Ruzicka (secretary)
Prof Zun

  • Meeting
The meeting took place on the occasion of the 3-rd European Congress of Chemical Engineering "ECCE 2001" (Nurnberg, Germany, 26-28 June, 2001).

  • Address
Prof Drahos welcomed the participants, thanked Prof Bohnet for his kind assistance in organizing the meeting at ECCE, and outlined the agenda

  1. Approval of minutes from Italy (2000)
The minutes were approved without objections.

  2. Information about WP meeting in New Orleans (2001)
Prof Drahos informed the participants about the previous WP meeting held at the occasion of the ICMF congress.

  3. Information about EMSI
Prof Drahos asked Prof Brauner, who participated in the EMSI meeting, to inform WP about the current progress in EMSI. Prof Brauner summarized the main points from the EMSI meeting as follows.

    • The goal of EMSI, as stated in the circulatory prospectus, is to promote: (i) discussion on and understanding of multiphase systems, (ii) co-operation and (iii) transfer of knowledge between different topics within the Institute.
    • EMSI is open with respect to membership
    • EMSI wants to set up international links to its counterparts in US (IMUST) and Japan (Jap. Soc. Multiphase Flow)
    • EMSI selects the generic areas of activity, much along the lines adopted by IMUST (i.e. Adiabatic, Diabatic, etc.). Each generic area divides into several technical areas controlled by working groups.
    • EMSI's main body is the nominated stirring committee, where each participant country has one delegate (co-ordinator). The committee nominates five its people who will actually direct the Institute.
    • EMSI holds its meeting annually, always at the meeting of the European Two Phase Flow Group (ETPPG) (scheduled for Stockholm for 2002, for example).
    • For 2002, EMSI plans to set-up the technical areas, to make web-site with links, conferences and other info, to establish relations with the sister organizations in US and Japan, and to prepare the annual meeting in Sweden.
  4. General discussion on EMSI
Prof Drahos opened a broad discussion about the new coming Institute, its ambitions and its possible impact on the European multiphase welfare. Prof Bohnet mentioned that once he was asked why Germany does not have a national multiphase society. He answered that because of redundancy and duplicity: there is (i) DECHEMA, (ii) VDI-GVC, (iii) MF WP under EFCE, and (iv) ECCE congresses, which fully cover the multiphase needs. He also proposed that our WP chairmen should be a member of stirring committee of EMSI. In the following discussion all participants contributed not only with their own bits but also presented points they came across elsewhere. The result can be summarized as follows.

    • It is probable that EMSI may duplicate activities of other institutions that already exist in Europe and work in the field of multiphase systems.
    • The activity of EMSI will very likely involve expansion into new areas (e.g. chemical engineering, environmental engineering, biotechnology, food industry, etc.)
    • Our WP should keep in touch with EMSI and develop ways to defend interests of chemical engineering community within EMSI (e.g. the whole WP may become a member of EMSI to rise our impact).
  5. Co-operation within the framework of EFCE
Prof Drahos encouraged the participants to go for joint-projects within the forthcoming 6-th EC Framework Programme, where the trend is to give bigger money to smaller number of larger groups, as compared with the 5-th Programme. Also, the role of strong end-users (industrial partners) is absolutely paramount.

  6. Location of WP web site
It was agreed that it may physically be located anywhere, where practical, with a link from the Dechema server.

  7. Sleeping members
In accord with the valid "Directives for Working Parties of EFCE" and with recent consultations with the managing bodies of EFCE, the membership of inactive members will be cancelled and new members willing to work properly will be addressed.

  8. Future WP meetings
Besides Prague 2002 (CHISA Congress), the 2003 meeting could be, based on regional considerations, at a conference somewhere in the North of Europe, and the 2004 meeting could be linked to GLS or ICMF conferences.

European countries take turns in chairing the Working Parties.
